Historical Evolution and Cultural Perceptions of Black Magic Law

Abstract

This article examines the historical evolution, cultural perceptions, and legal regulation of black magic across civilizations, with particular emphasis on India. It analyses how religious beliefs, social conditions, and cultural traditions have shaped black magic practices from ancient societies to the modern era. The study discusses contemporary instances of crimes linked to superstition, including ritual killings and witch-hunting, and evaluates constitutional provisions and state-specific anti-superstition laws addressing such practices. It concludes that strengthening legal frameworks, promoting scientific temper, and enhancing public awareness are essential to combating harmful superstitious practices while preserving legitimate religious freedom and constitutional values.
