The Frothy Tale of Chhath and Inland River Pollution

This article examines the growing problem of inland river pollution in India through the recurring frothing of the Yamuna River during Chhath Puja. It analyses the environmental, public health, and legal dimensions of river pollution by identifying major causes, including untreated sewage, industrial effluents, and inadequate waste management. The study evaluates the constitutional framework, environmental statutes, judicial interventions, and the role of the National Green Tribunal in river conservation. It concludes that effective enforcement, institutional coordination, public participation, and sustainable environmental governance are essential to restore polluted rivers and safeguard the constitutional right to a clean environment.
